The Scholar

The Prize honors the intellectual legacy of Henry Chesbrough, whose pioneering work on open innovation shaped a generation of research and practice.

Biography

A pioneer of open innovation

Henry Chesbrough is widely recognized as the originator of the concept of open innovation and one of the most influential scholars at the intersection of innovation strategy, technology management, and business practice. His landmark book, Open Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology (2003), introduced a new paradigm for understanding how firms create and capture value by combining internal and external sources of knowledge.

Over the past two decades, Chesbrough’s work has reshaped how scholars, executives, entrepreneurs, and policymakers think about innovation. His research has shown that in a world of widely distributed knowledge, organizations cannot rely solely on internal R&D. Instead, they must learn to purposefully manage knowledge flows across organizational boundaries, drawing ideas in from the outside while also allowing unused internal ideas to find external paths to market.

Chesbrough’s intellectual contribution extends beyond open innovation to business models, intellectual property management, innovation ecosystems, services innovation, and the commercialization of technology. His books, articles, teaching, and engagement with companies have helped create a global community of scholars and practitioners committed to advancing innovation as both a field of research and a managerial practice.

He is Faculty Director of the Garwood Center for Corporate Innovation at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, and has also held the Maire Tecnimont Chair in Open Innovation at Luiss University in Rome. Before his academic career, he worked in industry, including senior roles in technology and business development, an experience that has shaped his lifelong commitment to bridging rigorous scholarship and practical impact.
